Where will training technology go in the next five years? This will be a fun topic technology to keep an eye on and be able to keep updating it as things change. Right now things are pretty clear as to which direction we are moving towards mobile, being able to view content on all mobile devices. This will probably take a couple more years to get the technology caught up where things will be working.
Maybe identifying and easily knowing what type of content that should be displayed on a mobile device and might be taken a little bit longer. But at some point, we will go to see a consolidation of the things that are on the desktop and on the mobile.
The content might be the same, but the display method is going to be a little bit different where on smaller screen size devices.
If the Google glasses will take off perhaps this will be completely a non-issue since you will have unlimited screen size.
This year is 2012, its five years, it’s going to be 2017. It will be very interesting to see what happens by then. A couple of other predictions are fun to make, would a personal learning space be available. I think software such as module or other LMSs might start adapting better and providing better personalization within the LMS itself in order to better accommodate people and their training needs.
Imagine an environment such as iGoogle where you have widgets everywhere and each person can go in and customize their own widget, including their upcoming courses and past courses and be able to customize and personalize their page and make their learning environment look and act the way they want to.
Another great new item will be social learning. How do we learn from each other? We often thought that, a forum was the best way to go but now we know that having things spread out more in the world rather less structure, then a forum would be a better way to go.
Forums will still be effective around particular topics. But we sought to see a blend of things coming together from all different types of platforms and not just once. There needs to be some type of environment that pulls all these desperate resources together into one view and then the particular adapt at filtering out that that view looks like.
Your system would be similar to something that would be a content aggregator. And how you content aggregate course perhaps you would have people who validate the pieces of content from the web finding things out like mining gold and like little nuggets and then passing those nuggets on to various different channels.
It’s kind of seems like you might see the something like YouTube channels where you have your channel that you are broadcasting out and then people can subscribe to you and your personal channel, this channel would be probably platform independent and not matter if it’s in a forum, Facebook or Twitter, it could be either other areas, maybe it could even be email and the likes of that (a bit like Pintrest, but for text).
In a way Google+ is trying to implement something like that right now like creating and bringing in more separate resources that are index-able, findable and sharable. This is a probably a quite a different approach than you would see on Facebook. Not only people that you know can see this content, the content can become more global and anybody can share the content. And so training content, something that is tagged in this training may not actually be training initially, but may become training or it could become another topic within another course.
There might be better tools in other to measure, perhaps the assessment tools would be easier to use although maybe it’s some variations with the different question type, that person can ask. For example, with the adaption of HTML file and HTML file being able to run with all devices, you can incorporate the slide over as well as the real numbers, and entirely it may be an interesting interaction to ask people additional questions.
I think with the LMS we shall see additional consolidation around the large enterprise area, a very small medium size market and then, a bunch of small companies all moving up and growing into the medium sized market. Right now there seems to be pretty large gap in between the small market in the enterprise market.
The good news is that there are a lot of LMS providers out there, completing and submitting, we should see additional innovations around user interface and functionality and social. The old systems that are out there today are not built with social abilities, so they are not very well integrated with social learning and they have a very old school interface. This makes it pretty cludgy to use; I would hope that there is some additional user design and functionality that will also evolve.
Training as a brand extension of your product. Often times you can think of your brand as what you see on your website and what you deliver to your customer to go with your training should be an extension of that product. Try to make it as cohesive as you possible can and make it feel like a part of the product. That way there is slow rough edges that will win the product itself and the training, that way it will flow right through.
Another thing you want to be careful about of when setting up a new site is to not use any school terminology. A lot of people have a very bitter feelings about the time in school and prefer something a classroom or of course something exam people get sweaty from and freak out sometimes.
One thing I think certain courses are lacking in is showing the context and why you would want to do a particular thing. These are the real live examples of how you actually explain something or to do someone and providing some kind of context summary. If you are able to put it into a context with something that is meaningful for that person, obviously the message would be much more clearly understood. Being able to access the learning directly within the product as well can provide additional stickiness.
